How to do Fish Pose
- Assume Lotus Pose.
- Lie down on your back with your legs firmly on the ground.
- Now, arch your back by pressing your forearms to the ground. Place your crown on the floor.
- Bring your palms together over your chest assuming Salutation Pose. Alternately, you may hold your big toes with your fingers with elbows placed on the floor. Or, you can place your palms on your thighs.
- To release the pose, unlock your toes, place your head on the floor and straighten your legs.
- If holding the pose with your legs in Lotus Pose is difficult, you can perform the pose with your legs stretched straight.
Duration: 3 minutes
Benefits of Fish Pose
- Stimulates performance of lungs and is effective for asthma
- Boosts circulation in glands
- Relieves neck ache and back ache
- Relieves constipation
- Tones abdominal muscles and thigh muscles
- Activates throat chakra
- When Fish Pose is done with legs crossed as in Lotus Pose, pelvic region gets strengthened
- Improves blood circulation in the reproductive organs thereby enhancing fertility in both men and women
- Relieves stiffness in the upper back and neck and hence is very effective as a counter pose for both Shoulder Stand and Plough Pose
Note
Those with severe neck problems and lower back conditions can do Fish Pose with support. A blanket can be rolled and placed closer to the buttock thus supporting the back to arch.
If you find it difficult
to hold your toes, you may place your hands on your thighs.
People with migraine
should exercise care during practice.
People with high and low
blood pressure should perform the pose under able supervision.
Fish Pose should be
followed by Rest Pose.
